Lawal Ismaila Adigun started his Residency training programme at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital in 1992 as a Senior House Officer (SHO) in General Surgery and rose to become a Senior Registrar in April 1995 and passed the final Part II Examination of West African College of Surgeons in April 1998 for the award of FWACS in General Surgery.
Proceeded his training in Plastic Surgery as a Senior Registrar in Plastic Surgery (Post Part II WACS) at the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan in January 1999 to December 1999 and moved to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in January 2000 to June 2000 as a Senior Registrar in Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit. He returned back to University College Hospital (UCH) in July 2000 to December 2000. He was appointed Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon by the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital as well as Lecturer I in the Department of Surgery, University of Ilorin in February and March 2001 and rose to become a Professor of Surgery in 2011.
He has attended several Conferences and Meetings both locally and internationally with paper presentations starting from 1998 till date. He has served University of Ilorin administratively in various capacity. He was elected member of the Senate representing Faculty of Clinical Sciences between 2006 to 2008 and was re-elected for 2008-2010. He became a permanent member of the Senate in 2011 as a Professor of Surgery. He was appointed as Head, Department of Surgery, University of Ilorin between January 2013 to December 2015. He delivered the 122nd Inaugural Lecture of University of Ilorin in February 7, 2013 with a title: “A Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon in a developing Country; Practice; Problems; Prospects”. He was a member of Senate Committee in Grants and Research between 2015-2017 and was recently appointed as a Director, University of Ilorin Medical Screening Centre for a period of 3 years (August 2023-2026).

He was a Recipient of Treatment Grant of $40,000 from Smile Train (United State of America) for free 100 Surgery for Children born with Cleft lip and Palate in Nigeria. He has served as External Examiner for final MBBS examination in many Centres in Nigeria. Examples are Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Lagos State University Medical School, Ikeja Lagos and Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomosho. He has also served as Examiner for part I Membership Examination of West Africa College of Surgeons and also as an Examiner at part II fellowship Examination in Plastic Surgery.
He has served as an Assessor of over 10(ten) Professional carders to the Position of Readers and Professors for various University in different Geopolitical Zones of Nigeria. He has published over 80 articles in Local, National and International Journals.
