The Department of Surgery at the University of Ilorin in Nigeria has a rich history deeply intertwined with the growth and development of medical education and healthcare in Nigeria .

The Department was established as part of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences when the University was founded in 1975. Initially, it began with a modest setup, offering basic surgical training to medical students and catering to the healthcare needs of the local community. Over the years, the Department of Surgery expanded its scope and services, adding specialized units, advanced surgical techniques, and fostering academic excellence. It attracted skilled surgeons, educators, and researchers who contributed to the departmentalization and reputation. tHe original department has birthed a number of surgical related departments which are 1. Anaesthesia 2.Dentistry 3 Otorrhinolaryngology (ENT) 4 Ophthalmology 5. Radiology
